Pricing
How to calculate a fixed price per item + set up/digitization fee?
Giving your shopper a bundle price would be number one. For example:
- Product + the digitizing fee
- Product + Stitch Count
You want to make sure that you are also including the cost of digitization, any color changes and stops/starts.
Following the industry standards pricing per stitch is $1.00 per 1000 stitches. This in turn will make your service a commodity, ignoring the complexity and steps that go into it.
Pricing based on your competitors is not realistic! You don't know if they are profitable with the prices you are quoting. Its important to calculate it based on your own costs to production, to ensure you are profitable at the end of the day.
Offering pre-decorated products using Embroidery through RPC is the most suitable when it comes to generating sales with embroidery.
Digitization
Embroidery digitizing is an art form. Using digitizing software, a skilled embroidery digitizer will transform an image or text to stitches, creating the art into a file format an embroidery machine can read.
Any typical file format (jpg/pdf/bmp, etc.) can be transferred into an embroidery file. Most popular embroidery files include EMB and DST. The process of digitizing an image is not as simple as transferring a regular file into another format. It requires artistic and technical decisions taking into account stitch type, angle, length and density- transforming a 2D image into a 3D image.
Additional measures need to be made to adjust color, contrast and texture depending on the material of the product being decorated. There is software that can automate this process, however, depending on design complexity- hiring a professional digitizer or outsourcing your digitization might be necessary to tackle the project and maintain the integrity of the design/logo.
The best designs come from experienced digitizers, but having your own software will give you the freedom to tweak designs as needed.
You have a few options when it comes to digitization:

- Hire a professional to manually digitize your images. There are many people that offer digitizing services, make sure to check their reviews to ensure good quality services. You can find a freelance digitizer on https://www.fiverr.com/
- Hiring a digitizer on staff can be pretty pricey! But if a large part of your business is embroidery, it may be worth more to hire/train a team member.
